Struggle with networking events. Help please?

I have to go to networking events but I feel so uncomfortable when I go. I end up talking to my friends and not meeting new people. I know it’s important for my business, but I don’t know if I’m getting much out of it.

Any suggestions for what to do when you know something is important for your business, but you don’t want to do it? 🙂

This is a common issue we hear. I’d start by saying that your main problem is a mindset one.

A lot of people have the wrong idea about these events. They feel like they have to pitch their business to anyone who is breathing. It’s uncomfortable for you and for the other people.

How can you change your thinking about networking so that you feel more confident and comfortable?

People want to be noticed and they want to be heard. When you come from the place of really listening to others and genuinely being interested then you are making a real connection. When I’m in that uncomfortable place that you describe, it means I’m in my head and I’m out of the present moment. Take the pressure off yourself to “be a salesman/woman”. How would it feel to have the goal of connecting in a deeper way with 2 or 3 people and really hear what they want vs. feeling like I’ve got to give all my business cards out to all the people at this event.

That’s what I would do about any activity that’s important for my business but that I don’t feel comfortable with; I would do whatever I could to change my perspective about it.

Hope that helps!
